A Study on Assessing the Vulnerability of Climate-induced Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Developing a Project Model for Strengthening Resilience in the Philippines

Faculty: Alfredo Mahar Francisco A. Lagmay, Ph.D.

This research aims to assess the vulnerabilities of the Filipino IDP community, particularly with a focus on climate impacts on livelihood, health, and social capital. Based on the key findings, a project model for strengthening community climate resilience will be suggested. This research is conducted as part of ‘The empirical research on climate change’ program of KOICA, Korea International Cooperation Agency by the Korean Government. Ewha Womans University conducts the whole research, under the principal investigation of Professor Minah Kang, as a research-implementing institution. The field research, under the principal investigation of Dr. Maria Victoria Espaldon, will be carried out through a partnership with the University of the Philippines-Los Banos, and the University of Philippines Resilience Institute (UPRI) through the Philippine Agriculture and Resources Research Foundation, Inc,

The research team aims to establish a robust foundation and rationale for addressing vulnerabilities within each IDP residence area in the Philippines. This will involve an extensive literature review incorporating policy documents, prior research findings, statistical data, geographic information, and climate data. Additionally, the field research will be conducted through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions with IDPs, host communities, experts, government agencies, and local NGOs. This approach aims to analyze the vulnerabilities of the IDPs and devise ways to enhance climate resilience. The outcome of this analysis will contribute to the development of an action framework with the dual purpose of mitigating vulnerabilities and enhancing climate resilience in the IDP communities.

This research addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals for No Poverty (SDG 1), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11).
