Lahar Deluge in the Coastal Towns of Taal Lake

Faculty: Alfredo Mahar Francisco A. Lagmay, Ph.D.

On 24 October 2024, extreme rainfall by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine caused widespread flooding and numerous landslides in Batangas, displacing 97,847 families in 813 barangays (DSWD, 2024). The municipalities of Talisay, Laurel, and Agoncillo suffered the most damage from the impacts of the severe tropical storm and were also the same places with the thickest recorded deposits from the 12 January 2020 eruption of Taal. To examine the hazards and investigate the potential for cascading hazards, several methods will be done including the review of the related literature and data, remote sensing, and sedimentology mapping (size frequent analysis).

This research addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals for No Poverty (SDG 1) and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11).
